Bloom Dates

It's helpful for beekeepers to know when various plants go into bloom, since that affects nectar flow and pollen availability.  SABA's service area encompasses nine counties, so bloom dates vary quite a bit from one location to another.  The following document shows bloom start dates that were noted at a couple locations in the extended Capital Region.  While incomplete, it can serve as a rough guide to the dominant plants frequented by honeybees throughout the season.

We could really use some more data points from around the region!  All we need are a few volunteers to jot down when they notice plants starting to bloom in their area.  We'll collect that information and post it on our website as a resource for all of our members.

The button below connects to a simple form that you can keep on your refrigerator.  Simply update it as you notice a plant variety starting to bloom near you.  You can send your updates as they happen or at the end of the season, whichever you prefer.  If you have a record of past years' bloom dates, you can send that instead.

Please contact support@sababees.org if you would like to participate in this program so we can get a sense of how well we have the area covered.  By crowdsourcing the collection of this information, we should be able to create a better resource for everyone!
