Dr. Kaira Wagoner on "Honeybee Health and Hygiene: Fiction, Fact, and Pheromones"

SABA members have been invited to join the monthly meeting of the Columbia County Beekeepers to view this presentation.  There is no cost and no advance registration is required.  Zoom details are at the bottom of this announcement.

About the Event

Kaira Wagoner, Ph.D. and Research Scientist at the University of North Carolina, Greensboro will present her current research on a new tool for beekeepers that employs pheromones that trigger natural honeybee stress signals to enhance a social immune trait called “hygienic behavior” to combat the parasitic mite Varroa destructor.  Hygienic behavior is the ability of adult honeybees to detect and remove unhealthy brood from the hive, improving the overall health of the colony.

About the Speaker

Kaira Wagoner is a Research Scientist at the University of North Carolina Greensboro.  Dr. Wagoner is interested in honeybee health and chemical communication, particularly as they relate to Varroa and the social immune mechanism hygienic behavior, the ability of adult honeybees to detect and remove unhealthy brood from the hive.  Dr. Wagoner’s 2015 doctoral dissertation was an investigation of the relationships between common stressors, brood-signaling, hygienic behavior, and selective breeding in the honeybee.  She has continued this work as a Post-Doctoral Fellow and Research Scientist in Greensboro North Carolina, and is currently using natural honeybee stress signals to develop novel tools to facilitate apiary management and improve selection of disease and Varroa-resistant honeybees. When not in the lab or apiary, Dr. Wagoner enjoys traveling, playing games, and spending time in the great outdoors with her husband and two nature-loving boys.
